MEMORY BASICS One of the best ways to increase the performance of your computer system is by adding more memory. With additional memory, you can have more programs running at the same time, and work on larger business files like spreadsheets and databases. Easily installed, RAM chips can speed up graphics applications, multimedia and, especially, games. HOW IT WORKS Before information can be processed by a computer, it must first be transferred to a special data storage area called RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is connected directly to the processor by high speed data pathways. As long as your data is in RAM, the computer''s processor has almost instantaneous access to it. When the processor needs information that is not currently in RAM, it must be loaded from the hard drive and placed in RAM, a much slower process. So the more RAM you have, the higher your system''s overall performance.

Different Speeds of Memory The faster the memory, the 256mbdimm faster a computer operates. Memory comes rated at different speeds, and the faster the memory, the more it costs. Memory speed is measured in nanoseconds, and the lower the nanosecond rating, the faster the memory. For example, a 60 nanosecond chip is faster than an 80 nanosecond chip. Be sure that the 256mbdimm memory you buy is as fast as the memory you''re replacing. Many newer, faster Pentiums come with RAM that can run at 100Mhz-the speed of the system bus. It’s always a good time to add random- access memory (RAM) to your computer. That’s because RAM is easy to install and can improve the performance of even the weakest computer. A couple of years ago, the average computer contained four megabytes (MB) of RAM. Now the standard is up to 16MB, with many new computers sporting 24MB or more. And users who play computer games or work with desktop 256mbdimm publishing programs might have as much as 128MB of RAM.

EDO DRAM. Extended Data Out DRAM EDO speeds are measured in nanoseconds. You can buy EDO as fast as 50ns for your personal computer main memory (you may see faster EDO DRAM on some graphics cards. EDO memory is commonly available as 72-pin SIMMs). FPM DRAM. Fast Page Mode DRAM Fast-page mode is becoming increasingly scarce, but, unless you''re running a very early system (430NX chipset 256mbdimm or earlier) or a 486 system, you probably don''t want to get DRAM. Fast-page 256mbdimm mode memory comes in SIMMs. RDRAM is shipped in RIMMs (RAMBUS inline memory modules). Future systems using the Intel 820 chipset and the upcoming 600MHz plus Pentium IIIs will use RAMBUS memory, but they aren''t out as of this writing. Way back in the dark ages of the PC architecture, I once owned an original Compaq portable. While the Compaq supported a whopping 640KB of RAM, it only came with 256KB. I upgraded my Compaq myself with an additional 384KB of memory by carefully inserting 27 individual 16KB RAM chips. The hunger for memory has steadily increased 256mbdimm since then; 64MB is no longer unusual. Upgrading memory is easier, too; you no longer must painfully insert individual RAM chips.
